Water cannons used to disperse health workers’ march due to worsening congestion in sector

The Escalating Unrest in Morocco’s Healthcare Sector

Despite ongoing negotiations, congestion in Morocco’s healthcare sector has reached a boiling point, leading to forceful responses from authorities. Medical professionals recently staged a sit-in protest in front of parliament in Rabat to demand better working conditions and the fulfillment of promises made by the government.

The peaceful demonstration turned chaotic as law enforcement used water cannons and batons to disperse the protesters, resulting in injuries and sparking outrage on social media. The protesters, including doctors and health sector employees, criticized Health Minister Khaled Ait Taleb and called for his resignation.

Simultaneously, medical students in Morocco have been boycotting classes and exams for over six months, showing their dissatisfaction with proposed reforms. In response, government officials have acknowledged communication breakdowns and urged students to engage constructively with reform efforts.

The escalating tensions have prompted nationwide protests by health workers and students, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue and decisive action to address grievances and safeguard the integrity of medical education in Morocco.
