Türkiye’s key takeaways from the recent NATO leaders’ summit in Washington, D.C. have highlighted several significant points.
One crucial decision made at the summit was the reaffirmation that terrorism is the second biggest threat facing NATO after Russia. This is seen as a direct threat to the security of all allies, making it a top priority for Türkiye.
Another notable decision was the reaffirmation of the commitment to fully protect all NATO allies from the growing threat of ballistic missiles, particularly important for Türkiye’s security.
Furthermore, Türkiye’s preferred policy of NATO-EU cooperation based on older agreements was supported, aligning with their strategic interests.
The summit also recognized Türkiye’s increased defense spending, now at 2% of GDP, and NATO’s appreciation for this commitment.
In light of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Türkiye’s adherence to the Montreux Convention and mediation efforts gained global attention, with the summit directly referencing this and agreeing to provide training and long-term security assistance to Ukraine.
Overall, Türkiye’s contributions and commitments at the summit have cemented their position as a key player within NATO, with a focus on security, cooperation, and support for allies.
