Japan’s solar plants hit by 9,000+ cable thefts since 2023

Japan has been facing a surge in metal cable thefts from solar power plants, with 9,522 cases reported between January 2023 and June 2024 according to a National Police Agency survey. This alarming trend is attributed to the rising prices of metal, prompting the NPA to consider implementing regulations to address the issue.

The majority of these thefts, about 90%, occurred in the Kanto region, with Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Chiba Prefectures being the most affected. The survey also revealed that 121 suspects have been identified so far, including individuals from Cambodia and Japan.

To combat this problem, the NPA has instructed prefectural police departments to establish special task forces to crackdown on theft groups and illicit metal dealers who knowingly purchase stolen goods. Additionally, there is a proposal to enact a law that would regulate these metal dealers, as current regulations do not cover the buying of cut cables.

It is imperative for authorities to take decisive action to address this growing issue and protect solar power plant infrastructure from theft and vandalism.
