The deal happening in Turkey involves the release of 24 adults and two children, as confirmed by security sources.
Russia has released Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich and ex-US Marine Paul Whelan as part of a extensive prisoner exchange between Moscow and the West, facilitated by Turkey.
The deal, which includes seven different countries, was coordinated by Turkey’s National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) and is the most comprehensive exchange in recent times.
Although the United States and the Wall Street Journal have not officially confirmed the details, both Gershkovich and Whelan were wrongfully detained on espionage charges.
This exchange follows a similar event in December 2022 when American basketball player Brittney Griner was released from a Russian prison in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
As tensions continue between the US and Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine, the impact of these diplomatic moves remains to be seen.
