After being freed in a prisoner swap deal with Russia, three Americans, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, returned to the US. The exchange was the biggest since the end of the Cold War. Upon landing at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, they were greeted by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, and reunited with their families. The release was hailed as a diplomatic feat involving multiple countries. The Americans will undergo a medical check-up at the Brooke Army Medical Centre in Texas.
In Russia, President Vladimir Putin welcomed the returned Russians, including a couple convicted of spying in Slovenia, at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport. The release was praised by NATO and the EU, facilitated by Turkey. The high-profile swap involved 24 people from seven countries, marking a significant move amidst heightened tensions between Russia and the West.
Prisoner exchanges have been rare but significant in recent years, including the swap of US basketball star Brittney Griner for a Russian arms dealer in 2022 and the 2010 exchange of Russian spies held in the US for alleged double agents in Russia.
