The city of Moscow recently implemented a ban on the construction of microapartments, setting a minimum size limit of 28 square meters for apartments. This decision follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s directive to improve living conditions in the country.
With a goal to ensure favorable living conditions in apartment blocks, the ban aims to support families by increasing the minimum living space to 33 square meters by 2030 and 38 by 2036. Real estate experts noted that microapartments have been popular among young adults in Moscow, comprising 18% of the total housing for sale in the city.
The ban on tiny apartments led to a 60% price increase for properties smaller than 28 square meters, impacting the housing market. Microapartments have also been trending in other global capitals like London, where the minimum floor area for new homes is 37 square meters, but smaller apartments are allowed. Specifically, purpose-built student apartments in London average just over 13 square meters.
