Irish leaders Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Micheál Martin are set to present a new bilateral political agreement between Ireland and Ukraine at a Cabinet meeting. The agreement reaffirms Ireland’s strong solidarity with Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion, supporting Ukraine’s right to defend itself under the UN Charter.
The ten-year agreement aligns with Ireland’s military neutrality, providing non-lethal assistance to Ukraine. Ireland has already offered significant humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine, along with welcoming over 109,000 Ukrainian refugees under the Temporary Protection Directive.
In other news, the mandatory retirement age for gardaí members has been increased to 62, reflecting efforts to retain experienced officers in the force. The government is also set to discuss planning reform and the significant increase in cases handled by An Coimisiún Pleanála.
Additionally, a housing fund of €600,000 is being considered for students from marginalized backgrounds, aiming to support those from the Traveller, Roma, or care system communities in accessing higher education.
These developments highlight Ireland’s commitment to international solidarity, security, and educational equality.
