A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Libya as a boat carrying irregular migrants overturned, resulting in one death and 22 people missing. The Libyan coast guard in Tobruk reported that the boat, carrying 32 migrants, had nine survivors who were rescued and taken to Tobruk port.
Libya has become a hub for migrants seeking to escape conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, with human traffickers taking advantage of the chaos in the country. The International Organization for Migration reported 434 migrant deaths and 611 missing in the past eight months alone.
The migrants intercepted and returned to Libya often face inhumane conditions in government-run detention centers, including forced labor, abuse, and extortion. This situation has led to numerous tragedies, such as the recent incident where 61 migrants drowned off Libya’s western coast.
The abuse and exploitation of migrants highlight the urgent need for international action to address the root causes of irregular migration and ensure the safety and well-being of those seeking a better life.
