The tragic story of Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has shocked the world, as she fights for her life after her boyfriend set her on fire outside her home in Kenya. The attack left her with severe burns covering more than 75% of her body, with reports indicating a disagreement over land as the motive for the horrific incident.
Police in Trans Nzoia County revealed that Cheptegei’s partner purchased petrol, doused her with it, and set her ablaze during a heated argument. The attacker also sustained serious burns in the process. Fortunately, neighbors intervened and rushed Cheptegei and her boyfriend to the hospital for treatment.
The Ugandan Athletics Federation confirmed the harrowing event on social media, stating that the athlete, who previously won the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, is now hospitalized in critical condition. This alarming incident adds to a concerning trend of violence against female athletes in Kenya, following the tragic deaths of other athletes like Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua in recent years.
