In a surprising turn of events, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces a setback as the New Democratic Party (NDP) withdraws its support for his minority government.
Although Trudeau is not immediately at risk of having to resign and hold new elections, he will need to seek support from opposition lawmakers in the House of Commons to pass budgets and survive confidence votes.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh announced the decision in a video, citing Trudeau’s failure to represent the middle class as the reason for ending the agreement they had made in 2022. This agreement had ensured NDP support for Trudeau until mid-2025 in exchange for increased social spending.
Recent polls indicate that if an election were held today, Trudeau would face a significant defeat against the Conservative Party, the official opposition.
