Former New York governors’ aide charged as illegal Chinese agent in exchange for millions
Linda Sun, along with her husband Chris Hu, pleaded not guilty to criminal charges of acting as illegal agents of the Chinese government. They allegedly used their state positions to advance Beijing’s agenda in return for financial benefits worth millions. Sun, 41, was accused of blocking Taiwanese government representatives from meeting state officials and trying to arrange a high-level official visit to China while working in state government.
The FBI arrested Sun and Hu on Tuesday, with Hu facing charges of money laundering conspiracy, bank fraud conspiracy, and misuse of means of identification. The couple appeared before US Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo in Brooklyn to answer to the allegations. The case highlights the growing concern over foreign influence in US government and the need for heightened scrutiny in such matters.
