Fishing industry professionals in Andalusia are reeling from the consequences of the expired fishing agreement between Morocco and Spain. The non-renewal of the agreement has dealt a significant blow to Spanish fishermen, who were previously allowed to operate in Moroccan waters.
The Andalusian Federation of Fisheries Associations has criticized the Spanish government for not providing promised financial aid to the affected fleets, describing the situation as a “great loss” for Spain’s fishing industry. The Spanish Federation of Fishery Organization and the Spanish Fisheries Confederation have also stressed the importance of renewing the EU-Morocco agreement for sustainable fishing practices.
While Spain remains cautiously optimistic about the renewal process, Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries has emphasized the need for partnerships that respect national sovereignty. The final decision from the European Union Court of Justice, expected in late 2024, will determine the future of Spain’s fishing sector.
