Frontex Denies Involvement in Illegal Pushbacks and Human Rights Violations
During a recent session of the European Parliament, Hans Leijtens, the executive director of Frontex, denied allegations of the agency’s involvement in illegal pushbacks and human rights violations at Europe’s borders. Leijtens emphasized that Frontex has assisted in returning around 40,000 irregular migrants this year, with 65% of returns being voluntary. He also acknowledged the need to improve the efficiency of deportations for those whose international protection applications were denied.
Despite criticisms from MEPs about Frontex’s past involvement in pushbacks, Leijtens highlighted the reforms implemented since taking office in 2022. However, concerns about ongoing reports of violations in Greece, Albania, and Bulgaria were raised by MEPs, demanding greater transparency and accountability from the agency.
Leijtens firmly denied Frontex’s involvement in pushbacks, stating, “We have never conducted pushbacks.” The issue of pushbacks, especially in cooperation with Greek Coast Guard vessels, has been a controversial topic since 2020, sparking demands for accountability.
Overall, Frontex continues to face scrutiny regarding its operations at Europe’s borders and its alleged complicity in human rights abuses.
