The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, has given the Niger State government an ultimatum to address several unresolved issues or face the threat of an indefinite strike. In a circular released on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, the union highlighted the non-payment of hazard allowances and arrears from 2021, as well as the delay in implementing new salary scales.
The failure to resolve these financial matters has sparked frustration among university staff, further compounded by delays in the payment of pension refunds and the absence of a governing council at the university. The JAC members are demanding immediate action to rectify these issues, emphasizing the importance of these adjustments for the welfare of the university staff.
The union’s concerns come at a critical time as the university has started examinations, raising fears of disruptions to the academic schedule. With the tenure of the current Vice Chancellor set to end in December 2024, the absence of a functioning council poses challenges to crucial decision-making processes at IBBU.
