The Situation in the Middle East: Syria’s Commitment to Chemical Weapons Convention
In a recent United Nations Security Council meeting in New York, Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ali Reza Iravani, highlighted Syria’s commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
Syria has been actively cooperating with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and submitting monthly reports to fulfill its obligations under the Convention. The Syrian National Authority has extended agreements to facilitate OPCW tasks in the country.
Iran, a strong supporter of the CWC, emphasizes the importance of impartial and professional investigations to prevent abuse of the process for political agendas. The country condemns the use of chemical weapons by any party and calls for enhanced international cooperation to combat the threat of terrorist groups acquiring such weapons.
Overall, the focus remains on transparency, accountability, and resolving issues through constructive dialogue between Syria and the OPCW to maintain global peace and security.
