The Enugu State Government has clarified that private schools are required to pay between N100,000 and N300,000 as education tax, contrary to reports of a mandatory N5 million payment. The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, emphasized that the fees depend on the category the schools fall into, with a schedule of fees released in June.
Dispelling rumors of a N1 million to N5 million compulsory tax on private schools, the commissioner highlighted the government’s commitment to upholding education standards and ensuring effective oversight of both public and private schools. He explained that unlicensed private schools face severe consequences, including 10 years imprisonment and possible closure, leading some defaulters to launch a smear campaign.
Despite resistance, Governor Mbah remains resolute in his efforts to safeguard the future of Enugu children from illegitimate educational institutions. The ministry continues to engage stakeholders in education to uphold regulations and drive positive reforms for the state’s schools.
