Falklands: Three strikes and out of the game, for tourist operators who don’t comply with guidelines
The Falkland Islands Government and Tourist Board have introduced strict guidelines for operators and tourists visiting the Gypsy Cove and Yorke Bay penguin colonies during the upcoming cruise ship season. These guidelines aim to minimize disturbance to wildlife after a previous incident of penguin disturbance.
Operators who fail to comply with the guidelines are subject to a ‘three strikes and out’ policy, meaning they will be removed from operation after three violations. FITB’s Financial Controller Karen Lee emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules and working collaboratively to ensure wildlife protection.
Environmental Officer Emma Harte highlighted the operators’ awareness of wildlife preservation and their willingness to do the right thing. The guidelines serve as a framework for responsible tourism while safeguarding the Falklands’ natural assets for future generations.
