Unions slam British police for arresting independent reporter — RT News

Reporter Richard Medhurst was detained for nearly 24 hours under the UK’s terror law, causing an uproar among journalistic unions. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and UK’s National Union of Journalists (NUJ) expressed shock and concern over what they perceive as an attack on press freedom.

Medhurst, a British citizen of Syrian descent, was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport on August 15 and held in police custody, where his belongings were confiscated, and he was interrogated. Despite being released, he faces uncertainty about potential charges.

The IFJ and NUJ issued a joint statement condemning the use of anti-terrorism legislation to target journalists, emphasizing that journalism is not a crime. They are seeking clarity on Medhurst’s case and a meeting with law enforcement authorities.

Medhurst attributes his detention to his coverage of the Gaza conflict and his support for Palestine, cautioning against the misuse of terrorism laws for political suppression. His arrest sets a worrying precedent for freedom of the press in the UK.
