The White House has successfully negotiated the release of 135 political prisoners in Nicaragua. These individuals, unjustly detained on humanitarian grounds, include members of the religious NGO Mountain Gateway and other perceived threats to the authoritarian rule of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
Following their release, the ex-prisoners have traveled to Guatemala where they can request legal transfer to the US or other countries. The Guatemalan President’s office has welcomed these Nicaraguan citizens, highlighting the government’s leadership and generosity in accepting them.
Nicaragua accused Mountain Gateway members of money laundering and organized crime, allegations denied by the group. The Biden administration has called on the Nicaraguan government to cease arbitrary arrests of citizens exercising their freedoms.
Daniel Ortega, a former guerrilla leader, faces criticism for repressing dissent and consolidating power in Nicaragua. His recent legal reform allowing the prosecution of crimes against the State from abroad has sparked concerns about transnational repression.
Despite international scrutiny, Ortega’s grip on power remains firm, with tensions rising between his government and the Catholic Church. The ongoing situation in Nicaragua continues to draw attention and calls for action from the global community.
