Multiple Lithuanian citizens have been identified fighting on the side of Russia in the Ukraine conflict, as confirmed by Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas. He pointed out that these individuals are committing crimes against the state and could face prosecution.
Last month, a Lithuanian man from Jurbarkas posted videos of himself in a Russian military uniform, shouting “Glory to Russia” while firing a grenade launcher. The authenticity of these videos was confirmed by Kasciunas.
Those found guilty of serving in a foreign military without government permission risk losing their Lithuanian citizenship. In response to the Ukraine conflict, Lithuania has implemented strict anti-Russia policies, including significant financial support to Ukraine and calls for increased military aid from the EU and NATO.
Additionally, Soviet war memorials have been demolished, and Russian-born individuals in Lithuania have faced citizenship revocation over alleged ties to the conflict. By the end of 2022, dozens of Lithuanian mercenaries were reported fighting for Ukraine, while thousands of foreign mercenaries have been killed by Russian forces.
