A former deputy minister of Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, Pavel Baryshev, is facing charges for allegedly stealing a three-bedroom apartment in Moscow valued at 20 million rubles. The Russia Investigative Committee revealed that Baryshev used fraudulent documents between 2017 and 2019 to acquire the property, leading to a charge of “large-scale fraud” which could result in a 10-year prison sentence.
Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin dismissed Baryshev from his position as deputy minister for natural resources and the environment in June, attributing it to his “retirement.” Baryshev had served as deputy minister of the Emergency Situations Ministry from 2017 to 2021.
It remains unclear whether Baryshev has been taken into police custody following the charges. The case exemplifies the ongoing battle against corruption in Russia, with high-profile officials facing consequences for their actions.
