Reviving Marrakesh: A City Rebuilt, A Region Forgotten

Despite the devastation caused by a deadly earthquake a year ago, Marrakesh is once again a bustling hub for tourists seeking sun, joy, and good food. While the city has bounced back, the surrounding villages in the High Atlas Mountains continue to struggle in the aftermath of the disaster.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8, struck Marrakesh in September 2023, leaving thousands homeless and tourists fleeing. The city’s historic Medina faced damages, but today, Riad manager Nassim Ait Said shares that the beauty of Marrakesh is back for all to enjoy.

However, just an hour away from the city, the Atlas villages remain stuck in the tragedy’s shadow. The slow pace of reconstruction and aid distribution has left many residents like Driss Zehrour, owner of Riad Vallée Vert, struggling to rebuild and attract tourists back.

Despite the challenges, efforts are being made to revive the region economically. The “Let’s Meet in Marrakesh” campaign and aid packages aim to support both the city and the affected villages on the road to recovery.

While Marrakesh shines once more, the tale of two worlds within close proximity – a rebuilt city and forgotten villages – reminds us of the long road ahead for those still grappling with the earthquake’s aftermath.
