The ruling Democratic Party of Korea is considering amending the Emergency Decree Law to strengthen its demand for the right to lift emergencies in parliament. Recent statements by party leader Lee Jae-myung and chief Kim Min-seok have raised concerns about the “state of emergency readiness.”
A party official of the Democratic Party mentioned that they are reviewing various current law provisions related to emergencies in the National Defense Committee of the party’s policy committee. This amendment is focused on preventing opposition members from being arrested or detained after the government declares a state of emergency, such as not being able to request a warrant for arrest within 48 hours of arresting a legislator, or releasing detained legislators when the plenary session is announced.
This potential amendment is being actively considered by Kim Min-seok’s office. The concerns surrounding potential abuse of power by declaring martial law and arresting opposition lawmakers have been a focal point of discussions within the party.
