The European Union Supports Constitution-Making Process in South Sudan
The European Union has shown its commitment to the constitution-making process in South Sudan by providing 4 million Euros in support. EU Ambassador Timo Olkkonen emphasized the significance of this process for the future of the youngest nation in the world during a workshop in Juba.
The workshop, funded by the EU and organized by the Max Planck Foundation and the UN Mission, focused on federalism for the National Constitutional Review Commission members. Olkkonen stressed the importance of creating a common state for all ethnicities and societal groups with a shared identity as they work towards a democratic, stable, and peaceful South Sudan.
Despite the slow progress in implementing the 2018 Peace Agreement, Olkkonen urged the transitional government to provide guidance on key issues related to the constitution and upcoming elections. He highlighted the need for important political decisions to move the transition forward.
The workshop was attended by key officials including Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Ruben Arol and EU Commissioner Dr. Kathrin Scherr, emphasizing the collaborative effort towards a successful transition in South Sudan.
