The ongoing protest by junior doctors in West Bengal continues despite the state government meeting their demands. The protest, now over 40 days long, began after the rape and murder of a colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Junior doctors met with Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to discuss safety concerns and the formation of a task force promised by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Despite the replacement of top Kolkata Police officials and Health Department officials, the doctors have not yet returned to work. The Supreme Court had previously ordered them to end the protest by September 10. The protest has severely impacted healthcare services in the state, with thousands of surgeries postponed and patients left untreated.
While the government has acknowledged the grievances of the junior doctors and promised new security measures, the situation remains unresolved. The doctors continue to provide telemedicine services and free medical camps for patients, but the impact of their absence on healthcare services in West Bengal is significant.
It remains to be seen when the junior doctors will end their protest and resume their duties, as the state government works to address their concerns.
