The false story was initially debunked by CBS News but Microsoft was the first to identify Russia as the source. It was found that a website posing as a local San Francisco media outlet circulated the story with a fabricated video featuring a paid actor.
Concerns have escalated regarding Russian attempts to interfere in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Russian state-run media outlet RT has been accused of favoring Republican nominee Donald Trump to manipulate voters. Microsoft warned of increased targeting of the Harris-Walz campaign by Russian troll farms like Storm-1516.
Aside from influencing campaigns, Russian cyber proxies have also attacked U.S. and EU election infrastructure through DDoS attacks. These proxies allow for the potential spread of compromising information obtained from hacks while maintaining plausible deniability for the Kremlin. With election day approaching, there is a fear of electoral disruption caused by these cyber tactics.
