UN member states voted on a resolution demanding the end of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months and sanctions for non-compliance. The resolution, based on an ICJ advisory opinion, received 124 votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions. Arab countries called a special session ahead of the General Assembly, coinciding with the upcoming anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel and ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The resolution, demanded by the Palestinian delegation, calls for an end to the Israeli presence in Palestinian territories and the withdrawal of forces within 12 months. Israel rejected the resolution, calling it cynical and disconnected from reality. The resolution also demands the halt of new settlements, land and property return, and the possibility of return for displaced Palestinians.
Despite opposition from the US and other countries, the General Assembly supports the Palestinian cause and calls for peace and justice in the region, urging Israel to heed the demands of the international community.
