Muscat – Oman has made remarkable progress in the United Nations E-Government Index 2024, jumping nine spots to secure the 41st position out of 193 countries. This advancement places Oman as the fifth-ranking nation in the Middle East and North Africa region and 12th in Asia.
The biennial UN E-Government Survey, administered by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, evaluates countries based on three main sub-indices: Online Services Index, Telecommunications Infrastructure Index, and Human Capital Index. Oman significantly improved its rankings in all three categories.
In the Online Services Index, Oman climbed to the 48th spot, showcasing progress in providing e-government services across various sectors. The Telecommunications Infrastructure Index and Human Capital Index also saw positive developments, with Oman moving up to 55th place globally.
Oman’s strong ICT infrastructure and digital initiatives have positioned it among the top 50 countries in the Government AI Readiness Index. The country’s digitization efforts, including the 2020 census and recent digital electoral process in Consultative Assembly elections, have highlighted Oman’s commitment to technological advancements.
Notably, other GCC countries have also made significant strides in digital government transformation, with Saudi Arabia ranking 6th, the UAE 11th, Bahrain 18th, Qatar 53rd, and Kuwait 66th.
This progress underscores the strategic emphasis placed on digital cooperation among GCC nations, enabling the sharing of best practices and promoting regional integration in digital governance.
