US Justice Department Sues Owner of Cargo Ship in Baltimore Bridge Collapse
The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the owner and manager of the cargo ship responsible for the Baltimore bridge collapse, aiming to recover over $100 million spent by the government to clear debris and reopen the port. The incident, which occurred in March, was deemed avoidable due to improper maintenance of the ship’s systems, leading to a tragic loss of power and collision with a support column on the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The legal action targets Dali owner Grace Ocean Private and manager Synergy Marine Group of Singapore, who sought to limit their liability after the catastrophe. Six lives were lost in the collapse, prompting victims’ families to demand full accountability from the companies involved. City officials and local businesses have also raised concerns over negligence, with calls for enhanced workplace safety measures, especially for immigrant workers.
