The U.S. government is currently investigating whether China is assisting Russia’s nuclear industry by importing enriched uranium from Russia and then exporting its own production to the United States. This comes after the U.S. recently imposed a ban on Russian uranium imports as a strategy to disrupt President Putin’s ability to finance the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In December 2023, U.S. House lawmakers implemented the ban on Russian enriched uranium, prompting a surge in shipments of enriched uranium from China to the U.S. The data from the U.S. International Trade Commission revealed that these imports skyrocketed to 242,990 kilograms, a significant increase compared to the period from 2020 to 2022 when China did not send any enriched uranium to the U.S.
