With the rise in cases of the new COVID-19 variant in the U.S., the federal government is once again offering free at-home COVID-19 test kits to Americans. Orders for the test kits can be placed later this month, following a summer surge in cases. The Biden Administration had previously paused the program to conserve supplies but has now restarted it as cases climb.
Once ordered, the test kits will be shipped directly to people’s homes by the U.S. Postal Service. Each household will be allowed to order up to four test kits, which can detect current COVID-19 variants and are valid until the end of the year. The initiative aims to provide families with tests ahead of the holiday season, when gatherings often occur.
Costly over-the-counter test kits will be made more accessible through this program, benefitting families who may struggle to afford them. In addition to free tests, the government is encouraging residents to get updated booster shots as part of efforts to curb the virus’ spread. The FDA has approved updated vaccine formulations from Pfizer and Moderna, which are currently available at pharmacies nationwide.
Let’s all do our part in keeping ourselves and others safe by getting tested and vaccinated!
