British Chancellor Rachel Reeves faced a disruption during her speech at the Labour Party conference when pro-Palestine protesters spoke out. Middle East Eye interviewed one of the protesters, Jack, who was detained by police for an hour after being removed from the hall for holding a banner that criticized UK’s support for Israel.
Video footage showed security guards using excessive force against the protesters. Both Jack and his unnamed friend are members of the Labour Party and Climate Resistance, highlighting their concerns about the government’s arms sales to Israel amidst a genocide and its support for polluting industries during the climate crisis.
‘A changed Labour Party’
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn compared the protest to past events and questioned who was on the right side of history. Despite Chancellor Reeves’ dismissal of the protesters, SNP MP Stephen Flynn criticized her lack of empathy towards the situation. The audience gave Reeves a standing ovation, but a poll revealed that most Labour members support a complete ban on arms sales to Israel.
