Building a Culture of Peace in South Sudan: A Call for Unity
The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the Mission in South Sudan, Nicholas Haysom, emphasized the need for all citizens to avoid divisive politics and work towards promoting a culture of peace. In light of the International Day of Peace, Haysom underscored the importance of recognizing diversity as a strength and fostering intercommunal harmony.
He urged for a nation-building approach to constitution making and elections, emphasizing inclusivity and ownership by all South Sudanese. The current theme of the celebration, “Nurturing a culture of peace: our collective responsibility”, resonates as the country stands at a crucial point on its path towards lasting peace, democracy, and development.
Despite the challenges faced by South Sudan, such as intercommunal violence and economic struggles, Haysom praised the resilience of the South Sudanese people. He called for urgency in addressing the rescheduled elections and transitional period to prevent renewed conflict and political vacuum.
As the world observes the International Day of Peace on September 21, the message is clear: peace can only be achieved and sustained through unity, political will, and shared aspirations. Let us all commit to building a culture of peace together.
