The recent relocation of the Foreign Ministry official residence, which was moved twice due to the aftermath of the transfer of the presidential office by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, has sparked criticism for the additional use of hundreds of millions of taxpayer money for remodeling without careful consideration.
The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly received data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June, which revealed that the official residence of the ministry was moved to the former guardhouse in Gyeongbokgung, Seoul. This move came after the transfer of the presidential office to the official residence of the Foreign Minister, which was moved to the former presidential office in Samcheong-dong in September 2022.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs defended the move, stating that the new location in Gyeongbokgung was more suitable for use as a diplomatic mission, despite the criticism of unnecessary budget waste and potential disruption of diplomatic events. The controversy highlights the challenges of hasty decision-making in government relocations, raising concerns about the effective use of public funds in such processes.
