The Centre for Peace and Security Studies (CPSS) at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) recently expressed concerns about the rising violent conflicts in Nigeria. During a workshop to mark the 2024 Global Peace Day, Prof. Martins Ifeanacho, the director of the center, highlighted the increasing sectarian violence, insurgency, and communal strife in the country.
He emphasized the importance of promoting dialogue and reconciliation to achieve a peaceful and prosperous society, urging Nigerians to transcend ethnic, religious, and political divides. Ifeanacho called for a holistic approach by the Federal Government to foster peace, security, and unity among citizens.
UNIPORT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, echoed the need for peacebuilding efforts to address intercommunal clashes and other forms of violence. He emphasized the role of individuals, communities, and institutions in building bridges and resolving disputes peacefully.
The workshop also featured a keynote address by Mr. Olatunji Disu, the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, who stressed the importance of collaboration between security agencies and communities to ensure safety and security.
