As South Africa celebrated Heritage Day, reflecting on the lives lost for freedom and honoring its diverse culture, the EFF took a different stance. The party rejected the celebrations, highlighting the persistent issues of apartheid’s legacy in society.
EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys called the holiday a “mockery”, pointing out the prevalence of poverty among women and racial divisions in society. She criticized the government for failing to deliver true gender equality and for perpetuating racial inequality through policies.
Mathys emphasized that racism still deeply affects various aspects of society, from the workplace to education, reinforcing the marginalization of the African majority. She criticized the idea of a “rainbow nation” as a failed illusion, urging for a more inclusive and equitable society.
The EFF believes that celebrating South Africa’s heritage goes beyond mere traditional outfits and braais, calling for a deeper reflection on societal issues. The party’s rejection of Heritage Day celebrations serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in the country.
