French-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan is calling on Moroccan King Mohammed VI to end ties with Israel amidst ongoing violence in Gaza. Hassan, born in a Palestinian refugee camp, asserts that the Moroccan people strongly oppose relations with Israel, established in late 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords.
Hassan’s plea has also been echoed by former Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, who believes severing ties could prompt the West to reconsider its stance. Despite facing backlash online, Hassan maintains that the majority of Moroccans support the Palestinian cause.
Since normalizing relations, Morocco has faced increasing pressure to reverse the accord signed with Tel Aviv in exchange for US recognition of sovereignty over Western Sahara. Pro-Palestine rallies have united political factions within the country in solidarity against the Abraham Accords.
As the death toll in Gaza rises, Rabat has confirmed ongoing ties with Israel, citing benefits for Palestinians. However, activists continue to push for a reversal of normalisation, emphasizing the importance of standing with the Palestinian people.
