The Green Party national co-chairmen, Omid Nouripour and Ricarda Lang, announced their resignation in Berlin, stating the need for a new start for the party. This decision follows three disappointing state elections in eastern Germany, including a failure to secure representation in parliament in Brandenburg. Nouripour described the situation as the most serious crisis the party has faced in a decade.
Lang emphasized the need for new leadership to guide the party out of its current state, calling for “new faces” to oversee the reorganization and rebuilding of the party. Despite their resignation, the current leadership will remain until the party conference in November when replacements will be chosen.
The Green Party, part of Germany’s federal coalition government, is also struggling in national polls. The party plans to nominate Economy Minister Robert Habeck as their candidate for chancellor in the upcoming federal elections.
This move signifies a pivotal moment for the Green Party as they navigate through challenges and seek to redefine their political direction for the future.
