Strengthening Diplomatic Ties: Iraq and Kuwait’s Pledge for Cooperation
Despite historical disputes over maritime boundaries and natural resources, Iraq and Kuwait are working towards enhancing their diplomatic and economic relations. During a meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani and Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the relationship between their countries.
The leaders discussed the importance of resuming joint technical committees to address key areas of mutual interest such as economic collaboration, security, and infrastructure. These committees are seen as essential mechanisms to tackle long-standing issues and promote practical cooperation beneficial to both nations.
While unresolved territorial disputes hinder the relationship, both countries are determined to find solutions through dialogue rather than international arbitration. Kuwait’s support for Iraq’s recovery efforts, exemplified by hosting an international donors’ conference in 2018, reflects a commitment to fostering positive bilateral relations.
Though challenges remain, there is optimism that Iraq and Kuwait can overcome these obstacles through diplomatic channels. Resolving disputes with Kuwait may be a critical test of Iraq’s regional diplomacy as it seeks to strengthen its position in the Arab world.
