The ruling Liberal Democratic Party is set to choose its new leader on Friday with economic security minister Sanae Takaichi emerging as a surprise front-runner. Takaichi, previously seen as a dark horse candidate, has gained momentum in the leadership race despite facing initial skepticism.
Having organized a study group to discuss policy late last year, Takaichi faced early challenges in garnering support with only a dozen lawmakers in attendance. This raised doubts about her ability to secure the necessary 20 signatures to officially enter the leadership race.
