During a heated Knesset Education Committee meeting, a representative from an anti-LGBT organization sparked controversy by referring to LGBT organizations as a “cult” and accusing “progressive education” of supporting “mutilation” of organs based on students’ wishes.
The committee discussed the Education Ministry’s allocation of funds for promoting tolerance towards LGBT students in schools. Hoshen, a pro-LGBT organization, pointed out that most of the budget for these activities in the upcoming school year had not been used due to delays in approving tenders. They urged the Education Ministry to expedite the process to utilize the remaining funds amounting to NIS 3 million.
A member of the LGBT community, Yesh Atid MK Yorai Lahav Hertzanu, criticized the Ministry for the delay in publishing tenders, citing alarming statistics of discrimination and violence against LGBT students in schools. The meeting also saw objections from an anti-feminist organization, leading to a clash of opinions.
Signs of Concern
The debate highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding LGBT rights and the need for continued efforts to promote tolerance and acceptance in Israeli schools.
