The Minimum Support Price (MSP) system has been a crucial support system for farmers, ensuring they are protected from sudden price drops in the market. With the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan, the government has allocated Rs 35,000 crore to secure farmers’ incomes amidst market fluctuations.
Under this scheme, MSP procurement is reinforced by Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) and Private Procurement Stockist Scheme (PPSS), offering a safety net for farmers cultivating a diverse range of crops. The program has shown positive results with increased procurement of pulses, oilseeds, and cotton, aiming to provide a stable income for farmers and ensure food security for consumers.
Although challenges exist, such as uneven distribution of MSP benefits across different regions and the exclusion of private sector involvement in MSP-based procurement, the overall impact of PM-AASHA has been instrumental in boosting farmers’ incomes and stabilizing food prices. Moving forward, a balanced approach focusing on equitable distribution and infrastructure development will be key to maximizing the benefits of the MSP system for all farmers.
