Russia is on the verge of strengthening its military presence in the Atlantic Ocean with a new agreement on military cooperation with Sao Tome and Principe, an island nation in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Africa. The Russian government commission on legislative activity has approved a bill on this issue, which will now be presented to the State Duma for voting.
If ratified, this pact will give Russian naval vessels access to a port in the Gulf of Guinea, a strategic move that will enhance the country’s naval capabilities. The agreement includes provisions for information exchange, military education cooperation, combatting piracy and terrorism, and providing logistical support for troops.
Joint exercises and collaborative activities between the armed forces of both countries are also expected as part of this agreement. The treaty, set to last indefinitely, will not require any additional funds from the federal budget for implementation.
With this cooperation, Russia is poised to expand its naval presence and deepen military ties in the strategically important region of the Atlantic Ocean.
