Deadly Revenge Attack in Torit County
A man was shot dead in a deadly revenge attack between two rival groups, the Haforiere and Hiyala, in Torit County of Eastern Equatoria State on Monday. The incident occurred when a group from Haforiere attacked their counterparts in Hiyala, resulting in injuries to one individual. In retaliation, the injured youth’s colleagues shot and killed a man from the attacking group.
Tensions between the Hiyala and the Haforiere have been escalating since 2018, leading to numerous revenge attacks, killings, and incidents of cattle raiding. Over 40 people, including women and children, have lost their lives due to the ongoing conflict.
Despite several attempts at reconciliation through dialogue, the feud between the two communities remains unresolved. Hiyala Payam Paramount Chief Galileo Ohide urged government intervention to address the grievances and restore peace in the region.
Eastern Equatoria State Police Commissioner Maj Gen James Monday Enoka confirmed that the incident was related to cattle theft and assured that authorities were investigating the matter and pursuing the suspects.
Efforts to promote peace and co-existence among conflicting communities were echoed by Eastern Equatoria State Civil Society Chairperson Charles Onen Lokwaru, who condemned the attack and called for continued reconciliation initiatives.
