The Federal Government Announces Commencement of New Minimum Wage Payment
The National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission has revealed that the payment of the new minimum wage will start from July 2024, contrary to previous announcements. This decision was made after the President approved the bill in question following its passage by the National Assembly.
The government will only pay two months’ arrears if payments commence by the end of October. The Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure has also been revised along with other salary structures, following a meeting by the Committee on Consequential Adjustments in Salaries for civil servants.
Despite the backdating of the payment to July, the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have criticized the government’s decision as unfair and unacceptable. However, the NSIWC Chairman, Ekpo Nta, clarified the situation during a press briefing in Abuja and assured further directives on implementation.
Various salary structures have been listed for revision in line with the NSIWC Amendment Act 2024, ensuring coordinated implementation to maintain salary relativities in the federal public service.
