Lebanese Wounded Seek Refuge and Care in Iraq Amid Israeli Attacks
As Israel escalates its attacks on Lebanon, Iraq has stepped in to provide aid to Lebanese citizens injured by the indiscriminate bombings. Over 500 people, including 90 women and 50 children, have been killed, with thousands more wounded and half a million displaced.
Struggling Lebanese hospitals have referred dozens of critically injured patients to Karbala, southern Iraq, for specialized medical care. The Iraqi government, in coordination with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has facilitated the arrival of around 70 wounded individuals, with plans to receive over 200 more in the coming days.
Dr. Ahmed Abdul Karim of Karbala’s Health Department highlighted the urgent need for surgical interventions among the women and children affected by the attacks. The Iraqi Ministry of Migration has also welcomed displaced Lebanese families, offering visa extensions and humanitarian aid to those seeking refuge in Iraq.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani has announced a comprehensive support package for Lebanese citizens affected by the ongoing offensive, emphasizing Iraq’s commitment to standing in solidarity with its neighbors during times of crisis.
