After a court convicted Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut for defamation, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya accused the police of refusing to accept his wife’s complaint against Raut under pressure from the Uddhav Thackeray government. Raut was sentenced to 15 days’ imprisonment and fined Rs 25,000 in a defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, but was later granted bail.
Kirit Somaiya mentioned that they had to go to court to get the case registered after facing delays, and finally received justice after 28 months. He highlighted that Raut had made baseless allegations of corruption against them, and even though they tried to file a police complaint, it was not accepted due to political pressure.
This case against Raut sets an example for society, Medha Somaiya asserted, emphasizing that they would not tolerate false accusations. The lawyers representing Somaiya sought a two-year prison sentence for Raut during the sentencing arguments.
This incident sheds light on the importance of standing up against defamation and false allegations in society, setting a precedent for holding individuals accountable for their actions.
