Quito fires force President Noboa to cancel UN engagements and return to Ecuador
Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa interrupted his schedule in New York and rushed back to his country as a suspect was apprehended for arson attacks in Quito, causing devastation in the capital. Noboa announced that the perpetrator would face terrorism charges and a possible prison sentence of 10 to 13 years.
After the arrest in connection with the fires, Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office stated that the legal process was underway, while the National Police confirmed the capture of the suspect. Quito Mayor declared an emergency as casualties and displaced families rose due to the fires.
Noboa emphasized the tragic nature of the incidents and chaired an emergency meeting upon his return, after canceling his UN General Assembly participation.
