Celebrating International Day for Universal Access to Information in Juba
Media practitioners and government officials gathered in Juba on Thursday to celebrate the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI). UNESCO declared 28 September as the IDUAI in 2015, highlighting the importance of access to information for democracy and good governance.
The event in Juba, organized by UNESCO, focused on the theme of “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector.” Dr. Jacob Maiju Korok, deputy minister of information, emphasized the right to access information as a cornerstone of democracy, empowering citizens and strengthening institutions.
Julius Banda of UNESCO discussed how access to information empowers citizens to participate in decision-making processes. He highlighted the need to invest in public and community radios to broaden access to information across the country.
Oliver Mori Benjamin, TNLA spokesman, also emphasized the importance of media in transmitting parliamentary sittings live to listeners or viewers. The event underscored the significance of access to information in building a transparent and accountable society.
