The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has threatened to use ten per cent of the Internally Generated Revenue meant for the Area Councils to pay striking primary school teachers in the FCT. He made this announcement after inspecting the Apo-Karshi Road project, emphasizing that he will not allow children to suffer due to the strike.
Following a 14-day ultimatum issued by the FCT Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the primary school teachers in FCT resumed their strike demanding a 40% Peculiar Allowance and the payment of 25 months of Minimum Wage Arrears.
Wike expressed concern over the situation and has invited the Area Council Chairmen and the FCT NUT leadership to discuss a resolution. He stated, “No serious government will allow their teachers to stay at home while the children are suffering.” Additionally, he mentioned the ongoing Apo-Karshi project, where the contractor has assured completion by April 2025.
